jane corich

I have been painting in oils on canvas since 1985. I’ve always taken my subject matter from household treasures and extraordinary landscapes. My style of painting has evolved through experimentation with different styles and use of color. The Classical Realist style of painting that I’ve been working in since 2004 is one I had been striving to understand. Through the painting of multiple translucent layers of colors I can achieve a sense of voluptuousness that gives the painting life.
My non objective work has developed in the last few years. The abstracts works are primarily in acrylic on canvas layered on top of paper and fabrics as a base of texture. I also love the process of mono prints of oils on paper. These are my explorations of color and texture to build a story based on the implied.
I never considered myself a fiber artist till one day looking at my body of work I found myself surrounded by the quilts I designed. I than realized I was using the same sense of experimentation, color and composition as I do as when I am painting. I often find myself torn between wanting to paint and needing to play with fabric. Growing up I was always surrounded by sewing machines and fabrics. The need to quilt came to me while I walking on the street one day as a resident of New York City. I was awestruck by a traditional quilt I saw in a gallery window. I was completely taken with the complexity of design, color, and the play of Art or Craft. Since moving to the Bay Area I have made it a mission to use my eye for composition and color to make my own quilts. I love all the aspects of creating quilts, from the contemplative act of construction to the endless play of textures and colors which sometimes results in pieces which I feel are my “abstract paintings in fabric”.
